Sir” Michael, with triumphant final wave

Diverts us mortals from beyond the grave,

For we observe, to our amused delight,

The Irish Times Death Notice dubs him Knight;

And, just reward for conflict-filled career,

Gazettes him “General” in our Lower Sphere.

Peace to “Sir” Michael in his New Abode,

With phantom Honours by himself bestowed!

All is forgiven now, since none are conned

On plush Pavilion Pews in The Beyond.

Note: Michael Brennan, once prominent in the Irish cricket world, died on 11th April 2005, aged 72. In his later years he lived a life of phantasy, self-styling himself as “General Sir Michael Brennan”, last commanding general of the Hong Kong Garrison. His death announcement in The Irish Times of 15th April perpetuated his fantasies about his titles. The Daily Telegraph of 16th April followed suit. For many years he had been a member of MCC, having left Ireland and Irish cricket on a sour note. His Death Announcement caused some problems for The Daily Telegraph which decided that such a distinguished sounding person must be worthy of an Obituary Notice. No info was forthcoming on him, and according to my informant the DT contacted The Palace, who after all must know all about him since HM had knighted him.... So our former Leprechaun President caused ructions even after his decease.
