Match Review:
Batting
Fitzwilliam batted first and Dalkey opened their bowling with the wiley swing bowling of Joe Fallon and Stewart Reay. It had been agreed that the match would be reduced to 16 six ball overs each, with Dalkey using 8 bowlers and Fitzwilliam being allowed to use 6 bowlers (five bowling three overs and one bowling 1 over). This was due to a slightly late start and requirement to make time to enjoy our season's last match celebratory Pimm's/sandwiches and exit Castle Park by 9 pm. As ever Joe bowled accurately but with some very aggressive batting, Fitzwilliam plundered 22 off his two overs. Stewart Reay managed to restrict the runs to five, to compensate at the other end, in his two over spell. This was before Patrick Wilshere and Dave Ingram took over with the bowling of their four allotted overs. Patrick and Dave's respective figures were 0 for 17 and 0 for 9. Dalkeys new players Adrian Walker and Joe O'Reilly then joined the lineup as the second bowling change. Both these players showed latent talent and bowled excellent line and length. Adrian was pacey (0 for 15) and Joe very accurate (1 for 8), with his offspin. Fitzwilliam were scoring at a high rate and were 68 for 3 after 10 overs. Joe got Dalkey's first wicket, other than the three previous 20+ Fitzwilliam natural retirements, with a tip top high catch taken by Dave Ingram at deep mid-off. Paul Barlow and Humphrey Cuzner finished off the last 4 overs with tidy containment spells of 1 for 8 (with another good high catch by Dave Ingram in the deep) and 1 for 3 (achieved by bowling one of Fitzwilliams tail end pinch hitters), respectively. This ultimately limited Fitzwilliam to a challenging target of 100 after their alloted 16 overs. There were 9 extras and one unfortunate run out of Fitzwilliams Captain Barry O'Sullivan.
Fielding
Dave Ingram and Geoff Nurse opened the batting and Dave was out cheaply for 2 ( a very rare event) and Geoff was also out early on for 8, square cutting a ball that kept low and playing on. Dalkey's ace batsman and number three Dave Lee and welcome new Archiver Adrian Walker came to the crease. Adrian showed big hitting prowess but was caught early on in the deep off his second ball faced. The ever reliable Iain Walker joined the crease with Dalkey in a spot of trouble against Fitzwilliams young and accurate bowling lineup. Both Dave Lee and Iain Walker scored a quickfire 19 (4.4.1.1.1.4.4) and 21 (4.4.4.1.4.4) respectively and took Dalkey to 50 for 4 after 7 overs. Bruce Hill and Joe O'Reilly came in to bat and continued the fine batting. Bruce scored 22 (1.4.1.1.1.6.4.4) and Joe 7 (1.1.4.1). Man of the Match Stewart Reay played very sensibly and scored a rapid 16 (1.1.4.1.4.1.4) backed up by Paul Barlow who caused the 4 (leg?) byes to allow Dalkey to win the Match with 4 balls to spare in the last over.
Men of Match
Dalkey awarded Phoenix's Rory Doherty a Bottle of Wine for his batting spell and for showing fine bowling skills.
Fitzwilliam awarded Dalkey's allrounder player Stewart Reay their Man of the Match bottle of wine for his accurate opening bowling and last wicket match winning stand with Bruce and Paul.
Special Mention
Thanks to Iain Walker for umpiring during our fielding period, as Dalkey had 12 players on the day. Thanks also to Joe for standing down and letting Iain Walker participate and bat in his place. Also special thanks to Suzi and Morgan for visiting us at Castle Park during the match after Morgans great recovery from a heart attack/event sustained while playing on 15 July against Howth Taverners. Also special mention and thanks to Genevieve Wilshere for coming along and taking team pictures which will be published/referenced soon.
