Terenure Walnuts Home
13th May 2011 Match Report
Weather:
Overcast and slightly chilly with a mild breeze for the match played at our Castle Park Home Ground
New Player Welcome:
Stephen Orr was welcomed by all as a new player for Dalkey, after many years out the game. He arrived early for the match to practice and work off some of his understandable batting and bowling rust - he proved later that his batting had very little such residue by showing class in hitting a 4 and the winning 6 in the third last over of the match.
Match Review:
Fielding
The Walnuts elected to bat first, where it had been agreed by the Captains that eight ball overs were to be bowled, with at least 8 bowlers being required to bowl the 15 overs in total (120 balls). Stewart Reay and Nigel Martin opened the Dalkey attack with a tidy set of 4 overs. Morgan Dockrell and Humphrey Cuzner then came on for the first bowling change. Great disciplined containment type off spin bowling from a rejuvenated Morgan and some tricky speedy swing bowling from Humphrey limited the aggressive Terenure opening top-order batsmen to round 65 runs at the half way 8th over mark, with 4 batsmen retired or out. Patrick Wilshere and Pierce Butler then came on for the second change and as a result of some really inspired bowling from Pierce Butler, who got two wickets in one over, this helped deplete the middle order batting impact of Terenure who reached round 78 at the 12th over with 6 batsmen out. Paul Barlow, Dave Ingram and Iain Walker finished off the Dalkey bowling allotment with confident spells and Terenure reaching a challenging total of 93 in their 15 overs. The challenging aspect of the batting was the fact that the CP grass was long and 4's were hard to come by.
Batting
Dave Ingram and Geoff Nurse opened the batting and whirlwind hitting by Dave took him to the retirement score of 20 after receiving only 11 balls during the 3 overs he faced. Morgan Dockrell came to the crease with the team score on 41. A reliable batting 9 run dogged partnership between Morgan and Geoff then developed before Geoff was retired on 20 after 14 balls faced and the score on 50. Iain Walker joined the wicket and scored an aggressive 20 runs off only 17 balls, including the hitting of a very powerful 6. Morgan was run out for 9 valiantly trying to rotate the strike to Iain with the score 69. Iain retired with the score at 85 requiring round 9 to win. Stephen Orr and Paul Barlow came to the crease and with a powerful on drive for 4 and a lofted towering 6, Stephen Orr brought the victory home, with Dalkey reaching the winning target of 94 for 4 with 2.5 overs to spare.
Men of Match
Dalkey awarded Eddie the Captain of the Walnuts a Bottle of Wine for his sporting gesture/batting in walking when edging a faint glove/bat ball to the keeper, off Pierce Butler’s accurate spin bowling
Terenure awarded Morgan Dockrell their Man of the Match bottle of wine for his very disciplined and accurate bowling and sturdy batting. Morgan dedicated his form on the day to his enthusiastic 3 year old grandson who has inspired his valued comeback.
